There are numerous different styles of chicken soup to enjoy. The best is made from chicken stock made by simmering chicken meat or bones in water to produce a really good flavoured stock. In the past, chicken soup was always made using older hens as the meat would not be tender if it were cooked quickly. Today, the best chicken to use is organic chicken as it has such a good flavour. The classic chicken soup recipe is made with clear chicken broth with finely chopped pieces of chicken and often vegetables. There are cream soup recipes and popular combinations like chicken noodle, chicken & mushroom and chicken & sweetcorn. Other popular additions to the soup include rice, pasta, barley and small dumplings.
Chicken soup has long been viewed as the perfect comfort food for people suffering from a cold, the flu or other illnesses, as it is easy to eat and very nourishing. Chicken soup is also the perfect remedy when you are not feeling particularly hungry or in a hurry. Chicken soup is ideal for all ages, as it is easy to digest and can be thickened with mashed potato or cooked rice as an ideal meal for toddlers.
