Traditional stuffing

Thanksgiving is a popular national holiday, celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November each year. Although it is considered an American national holiday, Thanksgiving is also celebrated in Canada, Brazil, Grenada, St Lucia and Liberia. The day’s celebrations say ‘thank you’ for a good harvest and any other blessings received in the past year.

The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, when colonists who had sailed over from England aboard the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth (in New England, USA) shared a three day feast to mark their first successful harvest with the local Wampanoag Indians. Over the years, the feast has maintained its sentiment, but lost its religious roots, so everyone can join in the celebrations.

The annual Thanksgiving dinner is the perfect opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends over a very special meal. Nearly 90% of Americans enjoy roast turkey, which is traditionally served with mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce- with delicious pumpkin pie to follow. This is certainly a very different menu to the first Thanksgiving meal when lobster, seal and swan were served!

Although the Thanksgiving dinner is fairly straight forward; each dish must be prepared and cooked to perfection and what better than a delicious home-made stuffing recipe that is made using the finest natural ingredients and aromatic fresh herbs.

Although this delicious stuffing can be cooked inside the turkey as it roasts in the oven, many people prefer to cook it in a separate ovenproof dish and serve it as a side along with the mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Pistachio & Apricot stuffing

If you would like to make a slightly lighter stuffing for your thanksgiving dish, this recipe is perfect! With the sweetness of apricots complementing the turkey so well and with the taste of pistachios, this modern alternative recipe tastes great!

TIPS! You can use various breads to make both stuffing recipes, which is good news if you are gluten free as this stuffing works well with gluten free bread.
